con sketches

Baltimore Comic-Con was great! Thanks to everyone who stopped by. It’s exactly what I want from a comic convention: comic fans who bring their families and enjoy talking about, looking at and buying cool books and art. Also lots and lots of sketching. I thought I’d share a few of my favorites, as well as a few from San Diego that were originally just posted through my twitter account.

Also, sorry for the bad quality on some of these. Most were shot with a camera and without the assistance of my lovely and spectacular photographer wife.

Baltimore Comic-Con

Can’t believe it’s already been a year! The Baltimore Comic-Con is this weekend and once again I’ll be there. This time hanging out at the Kids Love Comics booths. Here’s a map:

This is one of my favorite shows. Full of comics, kids, superheroes and good friends. I can’t wait!

And since lots of people on The Twitter have been asking, yes- I WILL have Cleo books with me. I don’t expect to sell out, although I didn’t expect to at SDCC either. So if you want one, the earlier you get there the better. I’ll also have my usual swag of c&b books and art prints. Hope to see you there!

Sovena Red vs. the Robot

Here’s a pinup I just finished up for my friend Rod Hannah‘s new book out next month. It’s of the main character, a permanent 12-year-old superhero named Sovena Red. She’s fighting a big giant, generic robot because in my mind, that what permanent 12-year-old superheroes do.

sovena_red.jpg

The book is called Once Upon a Super Hero and the first issue debuts at NYCC. After that you’ll be able to get it online and stuff. Which I recommend doing. I’ve already read the first preview issue and it was good. Really good. Can’t wait to read more!

My good friend, and one of the funniest people on earth, Torry Martin, started a new column on Clash Entertainment a few weeks ago. I drew this slightly less cartoonized version of him for the site.

A new article goes up every Wednesday. I kinda dig this one where he talks about his awesome office decorating skillz.

As promised, Cleopatra in Space’s first book is now for sale in my online store. $6. Free shipping. Get it now!

You’ll be able to find me hiding behind table N-05 in the Small Press area (aisle 1700) as indicated on this official SDCC map:

sdcc_map-2.jpg

And I will have a bunch of brand spankin new Cleopatra in Space books with me! Fresh off the printer.

cleo_books01.jpg

cleo_books01.jpg

I’ll also have Cow & Buffalo books, lots of prints, Jen, some buttons and stuff… More than likely I’ll be drawing a lot of pictures too. This will be the first time I’ll have a table at SDCC as well as my first time exhibiting on the west coast. That means it’ll likely be the first time I’ll get the chance to meet a lot of you, so I hope you can stop by and say hi!

For any of you that follow my little webcomic, Cleopatra in Spaaace!! (and you should!), you know I’m printing the first chapter in an all-new 48 page book! Even though I’m still waiting for the physical copies to arrive from the printer, I thought it’d be nice to share the cover art for it.

cleo_cover01.jpg

And here’s one of those process flash animations for it.

The book will debut at the San Diego Comic-Con next week (OMG) where I’ll be hiding behind table N-O5 in the small press area. Afterwards, I’ll be putting them up for sale online.

Since I’ve been seeing a lot of artists trying their hand at Wonder Woman’s new costume, I thought I’d give it a shot as well.

I tried to give as much homage to Jim Lee’s design as I could, and I still had to simplify things to avoid frustration. For the record, I’m actually cool with the general idea of it. Giving her pants, the smaller tiara, the way the gold trims that red top. It’s just about 85% too much. The choker, those crazy gloves and weird foot thingies seem unnecessary. And the jacket feels like it was only added as a way to incorporate blue into the outfit. Still, this design will work better on film, which I’m sure is the point- especially for a much younger Diana which no doubt will be cast.

Check out some of the other cool interpretations published on Project: Rooftop today!

Iron Man AP cards

Holy bad parent, Batman! Sorry for the abandonment of this blog lately! Upon returning from HeroesCon, and in the wake of selling out of all my Cleopatra in Space preview books, I made a last minute decision to print up ALL of Cleo Chapter 1—complete with tons of extra features—for SDCC next month. Because of this (and starting Cleo Chapter 2), I just haven’t had a lot of time to work on much else. Except finishing up these super fun Iron Man 2 AP cards:

What a blast. Thanks to everyone who bought one! I actually still have 2 blanks left that no one has claimed yet. So if any of you out there want one, just drop me a line.

Here is some new Cleopatra in Space art I recently finished up for my favorite convention of the year, HeroesCon, which I’ll be at in June.

I will have a signed & numbered limited edition print run of fifteen for it at the con. Fourteen of them will be for sale at my table. The other one, along with the original b&w artwork, will be donated to Heroes Aren’t Hard To Find’s annual art auction which helps fund the show and maintain it’s awesomeness.

All signs are pointing towards this years show being the best one ever. I’m really excited. June 4-6, Charlotte Convention Center. Hope to see you there!

EDIT: I found out I’ll be at table AA-520, on the outskirts of Indie Island. Click HERE for a map that shows you exactly where that is, along with some photos of the above Cleo prints!

EDIT #2: The above HeroesCon print is now available in my online store!

Modesty Series

modesty_montage.jpg

This was a fun assignment. I was asked by Clash Entertainment, a fantastic new Christian site dedicated to teens and tweens, to draw a bunch of illustrations to go along with a series of online articles giving modest fashion tips for young teenage girls. There were thirteen articles in all which meant thirteen girls (and one guy). Those of you following me on twitter or facebook got a chance to see them as they posted weekly on Clash, but here they are sans text for the first time. But make sure to go HERE to see them all with the articles they were attached to. Some really good tips (if you’re a teenage girl)!

Finished a big batch of sketch card commissions over the weekend.

Illyana (w/ bamf doll), Colossus, Kitty Pryde & Nightcrawler:

Batwoman & Batgirl:

And from left to right on down, Optimus Prime, Hot Rod, Hound, Kyle Rayner & Jade, Colossus (painting a picture of Storm) and Chihiro & friends from Spirited Away.

These actually conclude my commission requests for the time being. I’m taking the month “off” to focus on Cleo and some con preparation. But I’m sure I’ll be back to taking on more commissions by the summer. Just keep an eye on my store or twitter feed for details. And thanks to all of you for the requests so far! As always, they are a joy to draw.

Gargoyle

A very nice fan out of Holland commissioned me to draw a gargoyle for a possible tattoo. She wasn’t too specific other than wanting the gargoyle to be cute and have a couple of kitties in it. Like she had to pull my leg to get me to add cats to a drawing. ;)

gargoyle01.jpg

I made one of those process animations of this piece too which you can view HERE if you want.

ALSO- for those of you residing in the northeastern region of this grand ol’ U S of A, I will be at the Pittsburgh Comicon this weekend, April 23-25. I’ll be in the Small Press section, booth S086 (right across from the concessions). So if you are planning on being there, make sure to stop by and say hi!

Jetta

Late last year, I was invited to draw a pin-up for a book spotlighting Jetta: a “Judy Jenson” type space-teen created in the 1950′s by the awesome Dan DeCarlo (artist on Betty & Veronica, Josie, Sabrina and many others).

jetta.jpg

I thought it’d be fun to draw the usual girl pin-up you might have seen in magazines at the time (you know, the ones of girls just sittin’ on cars because girls and cars are cool), but have Jetta sitting on one of the many fun futurey cars DiCalrlo created within the comic. I thought it came out alright.

Click here for the full INCREDIBLE listing of pin-up artists.

Batwoman

It’s Batwoman week over at Project: Rooftop (due to news of the unfortunate cancellation of the series of the same name). And because I’m a sucker when it comes to drawing red-headed bat girls, here is my quick contribution:

batwoman.jpg

I always loved Batwoman’s hair, but it bothered me that it was a wig. How can you jump around rooftops wearing a wig? Her mask covers 80% of her face. Is it really necessarily? Regardless, her costume is super cool. Red and black is a great combination.

new sketch cards

Finished up some more sketch card commissions over the weekend:

From clockwise left: Superman, Power Girl, Firestar and Rhino.

my new store is OPEN!

So, I get a  fair amount of emails. And it’s safe to say the most common question I receive is, “Can I get a print of [insert favorite illustration here]?”  Second would probably be, “Can you draw me [insert favorite character here]?” Lastly would be, “I just inherited a ton of money and want to give you some.”

And of course, I more often than not answer “yes” in all of these cases, but the processes and transactions involved are messy at best. NOT ANYMORE! Thanks to the invaluable help of Jake Alves, I now have an honest to God e-commerce shop that you can purchase prints, books, commissions and whatever else at. This is awesome!

The new Cow Shell Graphics Store, guys. Check it out! :)

For those that don’t follow Cleopatra in Space—shame on you! Haha. Nah it’s cool (kinda). I just wanted to share this illo I finished up and posted over there today. Super Punch is celebrating its third anniversary by asking a bunch of different artists to contribute to a tarot card deck. I was fortunate enough to nab “The Star.” Fortunate because it gave me permission to illustrate a little preview of an upcoming Cleo story.

And by “upcoming” I mean a few years from now (I have stories lined up for Cleo to last me a lifetime). But there are some elements to this piece that come into play as early as chapter 2.

Last Thursday, the newly reformed Project Rooftop debuted a new section of their superhero design site: all-ages interpretations of  classic superhero characters. Awesome! The new category kicked off with my interpretation of Wanda Maximoff (aka: The Scarlet Witch) & friends.

scarlet_witch.jpg

Crazy, accident-prone Jon Morris came to me with the idea and then pretty much gave me free reign to do whatever I wanted. And boy, am I SO glad he suggested a giant red witches hat. :)

Read more about all-ages Wanda HERE. And if you have a cool concept, make sure to submit it!

Another commission to scratch off the list! This one of a b&w six card puzzle set of those pesky teenage avenger kids teaming up against poor little MODOK. A lot of fun working on this one.
