the olden days

new cow & buffalo is up!

and jen’s brother and his wife left today and the house is feeling rather empty…
it was nice taking a few days off of work to spend time with family we don’t get to see very often.? in fact, it probably won’t be till january of next year that we are back in columbus and get to see them again. though we are looking forward to hanging out with jen’s sister this summer in san diego!? that’s something to look forward to.? but right now it’s crunch time to get some projects taken care of.? work, work work!? draw, draw, draw!? sleep, sleep, sl— oh wait, no.? that’ll have to wait.

yup, more cats

remember how i told you about that second sketchbook? i found this other catwoman sketch in it that i forgot about. i’d really hate to deprive you all of all my catwoman sketches. also, a cat girl. no relation to selina.

walking through the past

jen’s brother and his wife our down here visiting us from ohio this weekend. we spent our first full day together yesterday at disney’s mgm studios. despite some very quick rainfall in the morning we all had a terrific time, and i was surprise at how much the park’s grown since i was last there. by the end of the day my legs were so sore and exhausted from walking around the park that all i could think about was how much i just wanted to crash into bed and read a bit more of creature tech before falling off to sleep. the only thing i was disappointed in was what the animation section has become. i remember how there use to be all these animators busy working on whatever feature was due out in three or four years (i’m pretty sure it was lilo and stitch the last time) and the excitement that was carried through out the halls with concept work and storyboards and models of the characters. now, it’s much more of small animation history museum, with examples of how things used to be done and one lonely cell painter painting the same image of jedi mickey over and over again for park souvenirs. it made me really miss seeing another large scale traditional animated film from disney again like beauty and the beast or even tarzan. still, it was fun to find out that if i was a disney character i would be scar (though that might have been different if i had chose “i like to have lunch with nice people” instead of “i like to eat nice people for lunch”). oh, and my favorite attraction is still the muppets 3d thing they have. though again, nostalgia really set in there for another decent run of the muppet show.

okay, enough longing and more drawing. it’s time to get back to the drawing desk. but first, here’s a sketch out my sketchbook for sketch out of my sketchbook’s sake:

sketching

well, i have two sketchbooks that are about three pages away from completion. i keep one in a bag that goes with me wherever i go, and another one sits either on the coffee table at home or by the bed, depending on where i used it last. it might seem odd that i work in two books at the same time, but i have a couple of reasons. the main one is that goldfish have better memories than me, so if i don’t keep one in my bag, i’d end up being stuck somewhere with out a sketchbook and that would just be annoying. the other one is that i often find people want to flip through my sketchbook (the most humbling of experiences) and i use my “home” sketchbook for some of the more private figure drawings of jen that i’m sure she wouldn’t appreciate people sifting through. now that i have this blog though, i can share some of these sketches. no, not the ones of jen! but some of the one’s that people like to flip though. so i’ll slowly start scanning some of them and showing them over the next few weeks. it should be fun- kind of embarrassing, but fun!

first up, one last superhero. honestly, as much as i love ‘em,
i really don’t draw superheroes that often. but i don’t know. these are fun, so that’ll probably change.

steps

for the maybe two of you out there that don’t know, there’s a new copper up today. this one’s one of my favorites, for reason’s besides the obvious (yes, the giant mushrooms). i have so many projects going on right now, along with a full-time job that’s slowly sucking me dry, that i’m trying not to get to overwhelmed. i’m just trying to do one thing at a time, moving on to the next, and making sure i’m telling jen i love her at least once a day (i really hope i’m not forgetting that last one). i know with kazu working on both amulet and flight, he’s probably in a similar situation right now. it might be what sparked this latest copper idea, it might not. regardless, it’s beautiful as usual.

meeow!

i thought i’d show some of my catwomen doodles i sketched before the one i ended up drawing for drawer geeks. i really liked how darwin cooke designed her with the goggles, so my original thinking was to do something with those. they weren’t really working with the expression i wanted though, which is how i ended up with the more ‘batman returns’ style catwomen outfit. still, i thought it might be fun to show some creative process.

break time

new cow & buffalo is up. enjoy!

drawer geeks!

drawer geeks, the bi-weekly drawing group i contribute to, is new today. this week’s was one one of my favorites. catwoman!
here’s what i came up with:

what’s fun about these is that it gives me an excuse to draw something i might not normally draw along with giving me a chance to experiment with some different styles. because i never posted them before, here’s some of my past drawings i did along with what the subject was:

captain america:

cyclops:

animals in battle:

childhood nightmare:

remember last week when i said i’d have some new stuff for ya? you might not. in fact you might not even know i wrote anything at all. but i did. i promised new stuff and this buffalog is just one of those things. there’s some more new stuff i want to share too but a little bit at a time.

why the change? well, i’ve been wanting to find a better way to update this site for a while now, and wordpress, what this buffalog is powered by, just makes it so much easier to do so. i might not be turning any heads design wise, but in terms of functionality this just works better for me. it means (hopefully) i can do more drawing and it’ll be easier for me to show those drawings to all of you from now on. that also means updates won’t be limited to just sundays anymore.

but right now, i’m going to be late for church. make sure you read my front page. it’ll explain a few more things. and make sure you check out parable. i’ll explain a little bit more about that later. and make sure you check out cow & buffalo. it’s new today. most importantly, have a happy easter and watch your chocolate intake. i’ll be back later.

hey! a buffalog!

i finally conformed to internet society and started a blog, or rather, a buffalog. eventually, this will likely be the main page you’ll go to when you visit cow shell graphics. here, i’ll show the world drawings and sketches i scribble throughout the week, info on any projects i may be working on, my thoughts on movies, music, comics and anything else that may please me to write about and one day i may use this blog as a stepping stone to conquer south america. until then, it’s just this one post. but come back for more!
