for drawergeeks this week:

so a couple of albums i’m really into right now: the new modest mouse is totally rocking my world. it took me a few listens to get used to the inclusion of the smiths’ guitarist but now that i am i can’t get enough of it. plus james mercer of the shins is all over the place on it. also, i know this came out about a year ago, but i’m really impressed with the killers last album. i enjoyed hot fuss well enough, but it was definitely an album that catered to radio friendly play- or at least resulted in it. i’m sure, because of the popularity of it, the studio probably encouraged the killers to kind of repeat what they did before. instead you can tell the killers made the kind of album they wanted to. and the multiple times the group sings together on it is great. makes me feel like i’m in a tavern or something, listening to my mates sit around and drunkingly sing their favorite pub songs. for those of you who couldn’t really get into hot fuss, i encourage you to check out sam’s town to get another sense of what the killers can sound like.

this’ll likely be the last of these for a little while. i’ve got some big projects here at work to concentrate on and at home i need to focus on parable. i’ll pick these back up again though once things die down a little.

ape and tampa con

sorry for the lack of updates this week, but i’ve contacted a nasty virus that’s keeping me from doing anything but sleep and watch tbs sitcoms all week (which is probably adding to the sleeping). but i wanted to mention, although i won’t be at ape this weekend, my books will. joe fenton will be there with a limited number of copies of adventures in sandwich making as well as his book, journey of decent and some of dean rankine’s incredibly awesome minis. he’ll be at table 208 so stop by if you happen to be attending.

i will be at may’s tampa con this year though because, well… i live here. that’s a few weeks away though, but i’m letting you know now because i just found out.

hydra

drawergeeks is up! this week’s topic was titans. hydras can be considered titans right? if not, they kind of reside in the same world.

because i needed to get this one done pretty fast, i tried something a little different this time. i was inspired by dave stewart‘s amazing coloring in books like the spirit and superman confidential. mine didn’t turn out even in the same realm of coolness as his, but it was nice to try something new. i’ve probably typed this before, but that’s one of the great things about drawergeeks. besides giving me a topic of something i might not have drawn otherwise, it also gives me an excuse to try out new styles or approaches to things. they don’t always work out, but i always learn something from them.

alsoooo…. jen and i saw the flaming lips last night and i have to say that it was possibly one of the greatest concerts, if not life experiences, i have ever been too. we were at a big party with more confetti, balloons, and lasers than anything ever before. so, all of you who told me i was going to have an awesome time- you were right!

zelda!

i finally inked and colored that link drawing i drew a while back. and today, it’s on the awesome video game comic site, lifemeter!

zelda01-color.jpg

jen and i finally saved up enough money (or rather the government did for us- thank you tax returns!) to go out and buy a wii. and we were all excited to go get one this wiikend until we found out they are sold out everywhere! gah! guess we have to wait till the summer. which i guess is a good thing since i have plenty of work i should be doing instead of the hours i’d be spending in front of my tv playing twilight princess.

also, there’s a nice review of adventures in sandwich making up at digital strips this week. you can read it here.

mary marvel

so DC is in the process of “sexing” up all of it’s female characters it seems. they’ve done it to supergirl and now they’re doing it to mary marvel as well. (for those who don’t know who mary marvel is, she’s billy (captain marvel) batson’s sister who shares his powers granted him from the wizard shazam). mary’s one of the last wholesome mainstream comic heroines out there but times- they are a’changin i guess. and i drew this last week in remembrance of a more classic time…

also, three bands i’m really into right now: deas vail, the arcade fire, and silversun pickups.
