strawberry shortcakes

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

strawberry shortcake was this week’s drawergeeks theme.  i did a couple:

strawberry_shortcake02.jpg

strawberry_shortcake01.jpg

i saved some of my steps for that first one. so if anyone’s interested in seeing those, let me know and i’ll see if i can’t find some time this weekend to post them.  and that’s all i really have to say about that.  time for more important matters:

2008 SUMMER MOVIE RANKINGS!

superman: man of style!

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

i totally forgot about this.  project rooftop- a site i occasionally submit stuff too- was running a contest to redesign superman.  here was my take:

pr_superman.jpg

kinda goofy, but i still kinda dig it.  i just couldn’t part with the outside red undies though. i just know that’s going to be my downfall come voting time. but to me, superman just isn’t superman without his outside red undies.

i can go into more detail about my other changes, but really- who has the time to read that?  oh, you do?  okay then…

joker’s song

Friday, June 13th, 2008

one day i’m going to collect a book of superheroes/villains playing ridiculous tacky instruments with giant pink hearts behind them.

joker-song.jpg

drawergeeks topic this week was the joker, and i thought i’d draw somewhat of a companion piece to my batman/catwoman that i drew way back in 2006.  by 2016 i hope to have an entire bat-band!

has everyone seen kung fu panda yet?  what an awesome movie. it’s right behind surfs up as my favorite non-pixar cgi animated film, and definitely one of the best blends of action and comedy i’ve seen in a while. anytime po came on screen and did anything i was cracking up.  everything from the character designs to the animation to the backgrounds to the music was all top notch in this film.  this is really shaping up to be one of the best movie summers ever!

for those keeping track at home, here’s my current order list of summer movies i’ve seen so far, from awesome to not-so-awesome:

  1. speed racer
  2. iron man
  3. kung fu panda
  4. narnia: prince caspian
  5. indiana jones: kotcs

sorry- i skipped sex and the city that week.  saw speed racer again instead. :)  looking forward to wall-e now!

another mermaid and mocca

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

this is for a card set coming out sometime later this year.

pride.jpg

i actually drew this little mermaid earlier in the year- but just recently got the okay to blog it.

i’ll be at the mocca art fest this weekend! me, ryan and trade all have our own little lunchbox funnies section in the back, tables A17-A19.  i’ll have copies of adventures in sandwich making, it’s prequel/sequel mini, ash: the time traveling kitty, postcards, buttons, window clings, magnets… all sorts of stuff.  i’ll also have a limited number of art prints on me from stuff i’ve posted on this blog, including the mermaid above, as well as a free promotional parable poster for the first 90 people that walk by.

should be a really fun festival this year.  hope to see a bunch of you there!

what a wonderful feeling…

Friday, May 30th, 2008

time is just not on my side for drawergeeks lately. but i would have been kicking myself (which i’m sure is awfully difficult but i’d try anyhow) if i missed zombie week! so here is my super kinetically quick colorless submission:

zombie-rain.gif

one of my life long goals is to see/create a zombie musical, and i wish i had more time to do better justice to this image i’ve had in my head for a crazy long time now. also, trying some new things. pushing myself to use more solid blacks and be looser with my drawing. didn’t turn out as bad as i thought it might. though it needs a ninja. there will be singing ninjas in my zombie musical too. and david hasselhoff. as maybe a ninja.

also- i drew a guest strip for fellow floridian webcomiker derrick fish this week and forgot to tell you all to go over and read it on tuesday (i was too excited to talk about speed racer). so click HERE to go over and read it. dandy & company is a pretty hilarious webcomic, so you might find yourself lingering there a little longer than you want. but derrick assures me, that’s ‘okay.’

wonderdog pinup

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

this is a pinup i just finished up for scott zirkel’s wonderdog inc book due out this summer from viper comics. there are many a character in wonderdog inc, but i decided to draw rachel. who is rachel? you’ll have to buy the book to find out! mainly though, i just really liked her hair.

wonderdog_pinup.jpg

for those with wowio accounts, you can download a free ten page preview of wonderdog here- before the book even arrives in stores. for those without wowio accounts (with the exception of those overseas-sorry guys!), what’s wrong with you?

post-it dinos

Friday, May 16th, 2008

well, my available time to participate in drawergeeks was short lived. i’m back to being extremely busy again. still, i had to do something for dinosaur week! and so i scribbled this brontosaurus onto a post it.

dino01.jpg

and then i (sadly) scribbled six more…

everyone’s doin’ it…

Monday, May 12th, 2008

yesterday was jen and i’s five year anniversary and we spent it at a beach house one of jen’s clients graciously gave us for the weekend. it was just the sort of two day, relaxing vacation both of us needed before we dive back into the grind that is our busy lives. while sitting on the beach, watching the waves crash and ignorantly not wearing sunscreen on every single inch of our bodies (this was not known until later), we both decided to draw ourselves as we were in high school for the meme that’s probably just about over by now. better late than never though, right?

here’s me in all my grunged out glory next to present day spiffy, floridian me (just click to enlarge these):

highschool_mike.gif

and alternative rock jen next to present day sweetcake jen:

highschool_jen.gif

so cool that jen was excited to do this with me, on our anniversary no less. i love my wife- more than anything else on this world. even more than ice cream.

hi-yo silver, away!

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

well, now that i got a few projects out of the way and have made some good lead way on some other things, i can finally start participating in drawergeeks again. woo! this week’s topic was the lone ranger.

loneranger.jpg

i sorta struggled on this one. i don’t know about the rest of you but cowboys and gunslingers are hard! so many bells and whistles and holsters to think of. and don’t get me started on horses. apologies to anyone that actually knows how a saddle and harness attach to a horse (i was about researched out at that point).

MUSIC! bands/artists i’m into right now:

mgmt- i think they put addictive chemicals in their music.

the frames- finally saw once a little while ago and am shocked i’m just now finding out about these guys.

need to breathe- they opened for third day a couple months back and i think it’ll be the last time they simply open for somebody again.

murder by death- this was perfect lone ranger drawing music. thanks to keath for this one.

sera cahoone- thanks to kean for mentioning her. really, all i need is a banjo and a harmonica to make me happy.

ralph stanley- ’nuff said.

iron man is finally out!

cleo and the blog break

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

just for fun. :)

cleo-sketch02.jpg

seems like every time i get a chance to escape my regular drawing responsibilities, i only want to to draw cleopatra in space. which isn’t very often these days. so even though i’m doing my best to work on a little comic of her (yes- i am!), the process has been slow. today, instead of doing a little more work on another page, i decided to just relax and do something a little less uh… thought inducing- which drawing comics can sometimes be.

that said, i’ll be taking a little blog break for the next few weeks or so since there are some projects i really need to concentrate on. they are fun projects, so i’m looking forward to them, but they are likely going to suck up almost all of my extra drawing time. i should be back sometime in april. maybe sooner if i decide to irresponsibly break away from drawing comics again. :)

swinging in the rain

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

for drawergeeks‘ tarzan week:

tarzan.jpg

up until today, it’s been raining and pouring and old men snoring here in “sunny” tampa, fl. you’d think it would make me want to go back on vacation, but i actually find rain to be pretty relaxing. except when i’m driving in it and there are calls about tornado warnings.

amidst all the stormy weather, my sister had her third child two days ago and surprised us all with a boy. i finally have a nephew! yeah! as is with tradition, i did a quick sketch of the little newborn:

takeo.jpg

the kid is a dead ringer for bruce lee. even loved posing for my sketchbook.

and to make this a triple post (because lord knows when i’ll have a chance to post again) i’ll once again be attending the orlando megacon this weekend, march 7-9th.

megacon.jpg

i’ll be in the white section, table 7 with books, buttons, stickers, window clings, postcards, prints and who knows what else. if you have trouble finding me, just walk around artist alley until you see the life sized stand-ups of cow and buffalo and a haggard little artist tirelessly sketching in-between them. hope to see some of you there!

even monsters get cold

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

here’s a quick sketch for drawergeeksmonsters under the bed topic before i leave on a mini-vacation:

monster-under-bed.gif

see you all next week! well, unless i have nothing to post next week… and really, i guess you won’t SEE see me, this being just a blog and all. but i can see you! MUA HAHA HAHA! okay, leaving.

i don’t think gollum ever dated

Friday, January 25th, 2008

but i doubt his dates would have showed up anyway. poor gollum.

gollum.jpg

for drawergeeks.

also- my buddy jeff turned me on to what may be my favorite show right now (until next thursday when lost returns). in case any of you aren’t familiar with garth marengi’s darkplace here’s a clip:

the show is genius- and a shame since it only lasted 6 episodes. but you can catch it at 1:00am every sunday (or is that monday?) on cartoon network.

jug band

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

i got so busy over the weekend that i didn’t get a chance to post the drawing i did for friday’s drawergeeks. i present to you, the mullets!

jug-band.jpg

the subject was rednecks, but i think mine came out a little bit more hillbilly then redneck. i’m actually a big fan of jug band music. there’s a wonderful earthy energy to it all. big fan of the banjo too.

in the spirit of music, this feels like a good time to list what my ten favorite albums that came out in 2007 were. they may not have been the best albums, but they were the ones i found myself listening to the most often. listed in semi-particular order, with no linking because linking takes too long.

  1. Sunset Rubdown - Random Spirit Lover
  2. Radiohead - In Rainbows
  3. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
  4. Bloc Party - A Weekend in the City
  5. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Baby 81
  6. David Crowder Band - Remedy
  7. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
  8. Kings of Leon - Because of the Times
  9. Deas Vail - All The Houses Look The Same
  10. Travis - The Boy with No Name

if your favorite album is not on there, it means i did not hear it or it’s number eleven.

kiskaloo!

Friday, January 11th, 2008

kiskaloo.jpg

one of my favorite illustrators, chris sanders, just started a webcomic starring the adorable yet irate kitty above. there’s only two strips so far and i already love it. so does ryan estrada who’s celebrating sanders’ venture into webcomics territory by starting a kiskaloo meme. i was sitting at a presentation today for work and, since i had a paper and pen in front of me, decided to sketch the above for said meme. then quickly threw some color on it because color is pretty.

missing in action

Monday, January 7th, 2008

here’s something i actually drew waaaay back in september of last year but had to wait to post until now. my character for FACA4, Cream and Sugah:

creamandsugah.gif

unfortunately she never showed up for the fight. whether she got stuck in line at starbucks or simply got cold hoofs we’ll never know. here she is with her whole coffee themed tag team, Taste Test of Death, with Brewtality (created by Matt Yokom) in the background and our manager, The Mug (Mike Laughead’s brainchild), charging us into battle down in front there:

TasteTestOfDeath.jpg

the team was sent in on time so it’s a shame they never got to fight. but it’s probably good for the other contenders since our team would have ripped them to shreds. >:)

2008 list time!

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

pixies-list.jpgfrom catching up on everyone’s blogs and journals over the past two days, it looks like it’s that time again. the time to make lists of things! particularly things that happened or came to be in 2007.

something that most of you might not know about me is that i am a chronic, cusack listmaker. i even thought about designing a new blog specifically for the purpose of listing things i like or do not like. but then i wondered why anyone would, or should, care what it is i like. but lists do help me to organize my ever increasing memory of stuff.

i’m going to make this one easy on me though. here are just a few things that made 2007 a great year:

  • judd apatow
  • x-men
  • getting parable published
  • my book!
  • lunchbox funnies
  • journey cow
  • tv on dvd! (veronica mars, avatar the last airbender, battlestar galactica, how i met your mother…)
  • comic conventions that start with m (mega con, mocca, mid ohio…)
  • avatar the last airbender (listed again because of complete awesomeness)
  • new radiohead (and shaking up the music industry)
  • new david crowder (and an awesome concert)
  • FINALLY seeing the flaming lips!
  • discovering sunset rubdown (thanks kean!)
  • drawergeeks making me draw (and giving me something to blog)
  • BLOGS!
  • POGS! (wait, no… those are still lame…)
  • the dark knight trailer
  • grindhouse in the theater (first time i instantly clapped at a movie)
  • immonen on ult. spidey
  • world war hulk
  • we the robots
  • zelda: twilight princess
  • heck- just the Wii itself
  • crepes
  • the best batman ever
  • and more important than all of the above- all of my family and friends (on and off the internet).

i’m looking forward to this year. my goal is to draw lots of comics. :)

pink hearts and journey’s end

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

drawergeeks’ topic last week was elves. this is another one for my giant pink heart series. ;)

elf-luv.jpg

also, most of you (i hope) know i do a weekly comic called cow & buffalo. well, today i just put up the quindrupel-sized ending to a story arc that’s been going on since september of 2006. now that we know the story actually has an end, it might be fun to go back and read the whole thing from the beginning. it’s sixty-four strips in total, not counting all the places cow teleported off to over the last month. here’s where it all began!

and, i’ve said this elsewhere- but a HUGE THANKS to all the artists that put up with cow as he invaded your comics and/or websites. you totally helped make journey cow more awesome than i ever intended. in case you missed the event, the full list of all the comics cow zapped himself into can be viewed here.

ming doyle IS batgirl!

Friday, December 7th, 2007

or at least she was on halloween. ming (an amazing draftsperson by the way) was the first runner up on project rooftop’s latest flights, fights, & tights contest. this means she got a drawing of her in her redesigned batgirl costume by yours truly!

doyle-batgirl.jpg

i just sent this out today, so i hope ming likes it. check out the above link for pics of her costume. and click here for the other awesome prizes drawn by dean trippe and ben hatke.

also- cow can still be found zapping himself all over the internets

just got back from ohio…

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

…and all i drew were these lousy sketches. haha.

sketches01.jpg

just a couple mindless doodles of cleopatra while browsing, conversing and selling at the mid-ohio con this weekend. i had a really fun time and it was great meeting those of you who stopped by. a very appreciative thanks to those that bought a book or a print or more. i received a lot of nice compliments which is always a great boost to my ego. ;)

photos to come!

also this started happening while i was gone. i need to retain better control over my comic creations…
