young avengers assemble!

Another commission to scratch off the list! This one of a b&w six card puzzle set of those pesky teenage avenger kids teaming up against poor little MODOK. A lot of fun working on this one.

I’m slowly starting to catch up on a bunch of long overdue commissions. This one is of that classic DC task force team, The Suicide Squad!

suicide_squad.jpg

If you’re unfamiliar with The Suicide Squad, here’s a link to their first story (it’s pretty great). They also appeared briefly in Darwyn Cooke’s The New Frontier. My illo is kind of a blend of these two things.

I also made another one of those color-progress animations for it which you can view HERE (flash required).

Here’s a hodgepodge of stuff from over the weekend.

This is the card I drew for Jen for Valentines Day. It’s our two cats, Ash and Misty, being typical Ash and Misty. Jen posted the card she made for me over on her blog.

ash&misty.jpg

Here’s a couple of sketches of Khensu I posted over at Cleopatra in Space. Anything Cleo related I’ll prob just post over there, but I might crosspost the occasional drawing or illustration here as well.

And lastly, my sister and bro-in-law had their first baby last week! A healthy, adorable, wrinkly little boy. So here’s a little sketch I did of my new nephew, Desmond S Tally, while I was over at their place seeing him for the first time.

reed gunther pin-up

Chris Houghton is an incredibly gifted artist. And along with his brother Shane, they put out an equally incredible comic called Reed Gunther. It’s a fun western series about a hero who rides a bear and continually gets involved in adventures he’d probably rather not be involved in. Anyhoo, Chris asked if I’d draw a pin-up for the third issue, which I was more than happy to do.

reed_gunther.jpg

My pin-up features a character from the first issue which the Houghton brothers are currently putting up for free at ReedGunther.com. And issue 3 is ON SALE NOW! If I were you, I’d lasso up that issue before it sells out. You won’t be disappointed.

a little supergirl sketch

I posted this little sketch of Supergirl on the twitter yesterday and found some time last night to give it some color:

Also, don’t forget that Cleo starts up on Monday! Spread the word!

s’more sketch cards

At the sacrifice of my precious New Super Mario Bros Wii brick busting and coin collecting time, I’ve been taking sketch card commissions again. Here are a couple I just finished up this week. An Icarus and James Bond & Honey Ryder from Dr. No:

icarus.jpg bond&honey.jpg

And here are a few I never posted from last year. A bff Kitty and Nightcrawler:

And Streetfighter’s E Honda and Bison:

For those interested, my current PSC commission prices are $20 b&w, $30 color (plus shipping). You can email me at mike (at) cowshell (dot) com.

The best time to find them is in the early evenings, just before dusk.

This was Jen and I’s Christmas card this year. You can click HERE for one of those coloring process vids of it.

Also, if you’re lucky, one might flutter down and give you a present.

iron man cards

Drew some more sketch cards! This time for the Iron Man 2 movie set coming out uh… next year I guess. I only did 10 this time around so I decided to do something I haven’t done since my college art school days: paint traditionally! This meant dusting off my old paints and brushes and trying to remember how to use them again. It was fun!

batgirl year one

I just recently read Batgirl: Year One and fell in love with Barbara Gordon’s original costume. So much in fact, I was left with no other choice but to draw another Batgirl:

batgirl_yr1.jpg

It was fun to just draw something for myself again. I’ve drawn SO much stuff I can’t (or don’t want to) post here yet. Most of it is super fun but it can still be draining to only draw stuff you have to. Drawing Batgirls is like cartoonist’s therapy.

agnes quill

A while back, friend and fellow Lunchbox Funnies ally, Dave Roman, asked for some guest art for his wonderful Agnes Quill series (links aplenty this sentence!). Many months later…

agnes_quill.jpg

For those unaware, Agnes Quill is a young private detective living in um… well not this century. She can also talk to ghosts. I wish i could have thought of something more creative than a magnifying glass to give her, but I’m afraid that’s about the extent of my detective possession knowledge. Anyhoo, I had fun drawing this, especially all those skulls. I highly recommend Agnes’ first batch of adventures which is still available on Amazon!

a friend of mine is decorating her daughter’s new room with lots and lots of my pixies (very cool!). one of which is this old sketch that she really wanted colored. so even though it was strange coloring something i scribbled OVER THREE YEARS AGO, i did it anyhow. because that’s what friends do.

pixies04_color.jpg

and you know? i’m okay with this. i mean, i see a million gazillion problems with this drawing (as i do with almost all of my work) but i still think it looks alright. it’s funny to look back on your past work and see what works and what doesn’t and compare those things to your current work to see what you have worked out or should still be working on (sorry- lots of work right now!).

and i know you kids like your desktop sizes so here’s a larger image for those who want it. :)

here’s the last batch of animals i drew! i’m thinking of compiling all these guys into a small book–probably with some fun info about each one. what do you all think?

if you’re not already, make sure you’re following me on the twitter too. i’m still tweeting lots of sketches and stuff. there may even be some more animals down the road. :)

after the hunt

I did a commission trade with the talented Dan Boyd for his wife Christy’s birthday. I got this awesome Galactus piece and Christy got a requested Princess Mononoke.

mononoke.jpg

I was pretty excited to draw this since Princess Mononoke is the film that introduced me to Hayao Miyazaki and who subsequently became one of my favorite directors. it was great to finally have a reason to draw some fan art for such an incredible film. Christy wanted the illo set in the fall so I tried to capture that season by giving Mononoke a somewhat serene quality to her but also indicate how completely nuts she is. Hopefully I made it work! Drawing that wolf at least was pretty fun. Feel free to click HERE for a flash progress thingy of the coloring process.

ALSO- Baltimore was a blast. A very fun, successful show for me so I’ll definitely be back next year. It was also cool to be there to see CBT win the Harvey for best anthology! It’s still kinda surreal to have been part of such a popular book, but I’ll take all the award creds I can take to add to my bio. :)

i’m still posting animals to my twitter account. i’m at number twenty-one today! here are numbers nine through sixteen (which consists mostly of creatures living in my backyard):

40 animals in 40 days

for those of you not following me on the twitter, you are totally missing out! i’ve been posting all sorts of fun and silly sketches on there (some of which could probably even be considered more than sketches). one of the fun things i’ve been doing recently is tweeting a new animal every day–well, work day–until i get up to forty of them. here are the first eight:

more batgirl

another b&w batgirl commission. besides my laziness to use vanishing points, i kinda like how this one came out.

batgirl_rooftop02.jpg

speaking of girls, this month has been a great month to be into female vocalists on the music front. it’s been a while since i posted any sort of music lists, so here are five albums showcasing the talents of some very pretty singers right now:

ivy

another submission to drawergeeks this week. this week’s topic was poison ivy. it doesn’t take much to get me to draw plants and a fetching redhead.

poison_ivy.jpg

apparently my poison ivy is a naturist- which kinda makes sense, ya know? if you want, you can click HERE for another fancy, schmancy flash animation of the coloring progress.

i haven’t had the time to participate as much as i used to, but drawergeeks pulled me back into its web with a spider-man topic this week.

spidey02.jpg

i didn’t want to draw yet another spidey swinging with mj hugging her arms around him, but at the same time i really wanted to draw spidey swinging with mj hugging her arms around him. so there you go.

and here’s something fun! i tend to save snapshots of my coloring process as i go along, so i decided to combine them all into this little animation. you can view it HERE (apologies to my iphone readers for using flash).
