I’m excited to announce my first ever convention sketchbook, Operation Space Cat (vol 1)! 48 pages of some of my favorite b&w scribbles, sketches, and illustrations over the past few years.

I only printed an extremely low run of 200 of these. First place to grab one will be MegaCon this weekend, but I plan on offering a limited amount of them online when I get back. The books will be priced at $10 and come signed & numbered.

Speaking of MegaCon, I will be at my usual table (Artist Alley, White 7) with all my usual goodies (prints, Cleopatra in Space, an ultra-cute one-year-old [not for sale], etc). Here’s a zoomed-in map of where that table is exactly (click to embiggen).

Always have a blast at this show. And LOVE that’s it’s local (no traveling!). Hope to see some of you there!

commissions

I’ve decided to start offering commissions again. If my inbox is any indication, this should come as great news to a lot of you out there! Also, I have no idea how long I’ll leave them open. Just depends on how overcrowded my work life gets. Anyhow, pricing and details are HERE.

If you’ve been upset you haven’t been able to order any of my superhero or Adventure Time prints since I stopped selling them online (because of reasons), now’s your ONE chance to order some. Starting Friday November 23rd, I am putting all of those prints back in my online store for ONE WEEKEND ONLY! After this weekend, your only chance to buy these prints will be at the various comic conventions I’m tabling at—which currently is only about two or three a year.

Also, if you enter the code THANKS2012 during checkout, you get 10% off your entire order–including all books! So it’s a good weekend to order stuff regardless if you’re interested in specific prints or not. Happy shopping, and thanks for all of your love and support this past year!

Throughout last year I Illustrated a fantastic book by author Mike Jung titled Geeks, Girls, and Secret Identities- and that book is officially out this week! Better yet, the book is receiving some wonderful reviews including this one from Publishers Weekly. BEST yet, that review gives a good breakdown of the book so I don’t have to type it here. But for those too busy/lazy to click and look, the gist is this: superhero fanclub, giant robot, school-yard crush, evil plot, exciting twist, lots-of-action.

I illustrated the jacket and 40 or so interior illustrations for GG&SI, most of wich consisted of drawing said giant robot, a beefy superhero, a goonies-esque trio, and one punky young gap-toothed girl. Oh and pizza. I also drew a bunch of pizza. It was a great gig. I know I’m biased but I can’t recommend the book highly enough. It’s just super fun.

The full jacket and a few spolier-free interiors posted below.

Geeks, Girls, and Secret Identities is written by Mike Jung and published by Scholastic/ Levine. Available for purchase at booksellers everywhere and HERE.

I will be at Baltimore Comic-Con this weekend, September 8th-9th at the Baltimore Convention Center. Once again I’ll be sharing space with some of the best kid and all-ages comic creators in the business at the Kids Love Comics pavilion- Booth 2403. Map and info below.

Along with Heroes Con, BCC is one of the best kid-friendly shows on the east coast and there’s going to be a lot of events and activities going on. So if you have children, make sure to bring them by. My attendance was something of a last minute thing, but hopefully I can squeeze in some sort of activity or demonstration as well. Maybe show the kids how to draw space cats or sumthin. At any rate, should be a fun time and I look forward to seeings some of you there!

My watercolored piece for the Heroes Con art auction this year. Featuring everyone’s favorite superhero duo (well, mine anyhow). You (or a friend) can bid on it Saturday night!

Heroes Con is this weekend, June 22-24 in Charlotte, NC. I’ll be in Indie Island table AA-530, surrounded by friends, as indicated by this awesome map:

Hope to see you there!

Cow Boy, by two fine fellows by the name of Nate Cosby and Chris Eliopoulos and published by Archaia, is out in comic shops today! The book is wonderful, and I’m not just sayin’ that because I have a short three-page comic in it featuring the above redhead and her antarctic-feathered companion. Don’t believe me? Read the first four chapters HERE! And then go to your local shop to read the rest (plus three other short comics by some finer storytellers than I).

You can also purchase Cow Boy over on Amazon if you are so inclined.

Over the past couple months I’ve been working on some really fun illustrations for an all ages card game called Goblins Drool, Fairies Rule! Here are 10 of those goblins and fairies from the 40 cards I’ll be drawing in total for the game (I’ll continue posting them here).

The reason I’m telling you this (besides to post some fun art) is the game just launched a Kickstarter today. Not only that, but backer rewards include a hardcover art book and the original 9×12 pencil art for each of my cards! Those are some rad rewards. The game looks really fun and could use your support, so if you’re interested, please consider backing and/or spreading the word.

Thanks!

In an effort to be a healthy financial provider for my son, I’ve put the original art for my last two Batgirl/Supergirl comics up for bid on eBay.

I rarely sell original art so this is a good opportunity to get something of mine if you’re interested. Both pages also include a full-color print of the final comic, which I guess is also something of a rarity now that I’m not selling those online any longer.

I’ll once again be at MegaCon this weekend in Orlando, FL. One of only two or three shows I’ll be attending this year (HeroesCon and possibly Baltimore being the other two). I’ll be in my usual spot in Artist Alley- white section, table 7- as indicated on this useful map:

And here’s where I’ll be in relationship to Stan Lee for those who are interested.

Also, since I know people will ask, I will have ALL my usual prints and books available. Yes, even those no longer available in my online store. I’ll even draw Batgirl or Supergirl for you if you ask nicely (and hand me money). Plus, there’s the possibility you might even get to meet my son if you stop by since he and my wife will be enjoying the entire weekend with me.

Hope to see you there!

Oliver

On October 13th at 3:41 am, Oliver Prime Maihack rolled out* at 7 lbs, 1 oz, 20 in. He’s kinda like the best thing ever.

* Jen would like to inform everyone that “rolling out” was not how Oliver arrived but was, in fact, slightly the opposite of that.

I decided to finally dip my toes in the world of online auctioning and put the original art for both my SUPERGIRL/BATGIRL cover and comic up for bid on eBay!

These pieces here:

I’ve never sold anything on eBay before, and I rarely sell original art, so this should be a fun experiment! or a disappointing one. Either way, it’ll be an experiment! And now that I actually have something set up on there, maybe I’ll offer some other original arts in the future.

Also, interviews:

Speaking of Batgirl and Supergirl, there’s a short little interview with me on The Brave an The Old specifically about those pieces.

And for those of you sick of hearing about Supergirl and Batgirl here’s ANOTHER interview about all my other comics work pre-supergirl/batgirl craziness.

Commissions are open! I know a few of you have been waiting forever for that announcement.  I’ve gone in and added some new options and tweaked the pricing a little too. Now you can get a larger (9×12) watercolor illustration in addition to the sketchcard option. I’ll keep commissions open as long as I feel comfortable with  my workload (which could change at any given moment).

I’ve also thrown a TON of new prints into the store, including all the morning sketches I posted about last week. I’ll be placing an order this week so if you want one sooner rather than later, best to place your own order within the next couple of days.

Thanks, everyone!

Comic-Con is only a few days away and I’ll be there! I’m pretty close to where I was last year, this time at table O-02 in the Small Press area (aisle 1800). Here’s a map:

You can click HERE for where that is in relationship to the entire gigantic floor.

What I’ll have: Cleoptra in Space #2 (which debuts at the show), copies of Cleo #1 and limited copies of Cow & Buffalo. Also lots of prints and I’ll probably throw some original art into my suitcase as well.

As far as commissions go, since this show is so insane and I’ll be handling sales solo this year (my lovely, child-carrying wife is understandably sitting this one out), I’m only going to be offering head/bust sketches this time around. But super cheap: only $25. If during the weekend I feel caught up, I might offer more. But judging from last year that’s not likely to happen.

SDCC is always a fun time. Can’t wait! Hope to see a lot of you there!

EDIT: If anyone would like to commission a sketch early for pickup at the show, feel free to PayPal me at mike@cowshell.com. $25 head/bust sketches only.

I am now taking pre-orders for Cleopatra in Space #2! The 72 pg full-color soft-bound book will be priced at only $10 and all pre-orders will receive free shipping (starting in August, due to increased shipping costs, all shipping for books in my store will be $2).

Pre-orders help cover my costs for book 2 which, due to it’s page count and color printing, was an expensive book to produce. But it’s going to look good. Real good. Especially considering you’re going to get new and never-before-seen art by me, a behind-the-scenes process, and all-new guest art by Tony Cliff, Otis Frampton, Mitch Gerads, Chris Houghton, Tracy Lee, Sarah Mensinga, Jon Morris and Jez Tuya!

I’m also, for the first time, offering an Artist Edition which will include an original pencil sketch by me (something more substantial then my usual book doodles). The Artist Edition will be priced at $15. Both the regular editions and Artist Editions will be signed.

So what are you waiting for? Pre-order Cleopatra in Space #2 right now!

Heroes Con 2011

Yup! Heroes Con is this weekend. I’ll once again be situated in Indie Island. This time at table AA-523 (only a couple tables over from where I usually am) and with my good friends Joel Carroll, Jason Horn and Dean Trippe to the lefts and rights of me. Which you can see from this map (click to enlarge):

heroes_map2011.jpg

I’ll also be on a webcomics panel Sunday morning. Here’s the info on that:

Sunday 11:30 AM
WEB COMICS–Group Effort
(Room 206)

Meet the Small Press groups who have developed their own multi-strip brand: Curt Franklin, Chris Haley, Mike Maihack, Kevin Church, and Benjamin Birdie will sit down and talk to Comic News Insider’s Jimmy Aquino about creativity in the Small Press World.

That should be fun. And don’t forget about the Catwoman piece I painted for their annual auction. I managed to find a frame for it too. See:

catwoman_framed.jpg

That’ll be on Saturday night at the Westin across from the convention center. It’s a big party that helps benefit the show (allowing guests like me to go as well as keeping ticket prices super-low or even free if you’re under 12).

So lots of stuff to look forward to. I’ll of course have Cleo books, prints, buttons, a pregnant wife, etc… as well as sketching for those who catch me early enough (I am a notoriously slow con sketcher).

Can’t wait. Love this show. Hope to see a lot of you there!

So unless you were hiding under a fraggle rock last weekend, you probably heard that Archaia is putting out a hardcover comic collection for Jim Henson’s The Storyteller series that aired many years back. You can read more about it HERE.

Anyhow, I’ll be drawing a  story for it! Don’t know what exactly yet. But who cares? It’s Jim Henson’s The Storyteller! I remember watching this series as a kid and being both inspired and creeped out by it at the same time. I never would have thought I’d get a chance to play around in the same world one day.

The list of talent in the book is pretty incredible. I’m flattered Nate asked me to contribute.

Big News

Jen and I decided to work on a project together. It’ll be out in October. Here’s a sneak peek.

MegaCon 2011

Orlando MegaCon is this weekend! And I’ll be there. This is my most localest show. You should just assume as long as I’m living in Tampa and making comics, I’ll be at MegaCon. Here’s a map! :D

megacon2011_map.jpg

You’ll be able to find me same spot as always: white section; table 7. Looking forward to seeing both old and new faces. If you won’t be able to make it, here are the other places I plan on being at this year:

Heroes Con
June 3rd – 5th, 2011
Charlotte, NC

Comic-Con
July 21st – 24th, 2011
San Diego, CA

Baltimore Comic-Con
August 20th – 21st, 2011

As I mentioned last week, I’ll be in Seattle this weekend for Emerald City Comicon! I’ve never been to this show before (or Seattle for that matter) but I’m told it’s amazing. Also that it rains a lot. I’m really looking forward to it (the show, not the rain)!

Anyhow, I’ll be tabling in Artist Alley; table G-22. Here’s a map to help you find where that is (click for a larger view):

eccc_map.jpg

Also, don’t forget about ECCC’s exclusive hardcover Monsters & Dames book published to raise money for the Seattle Children’s Hospital. Here’s the piece I did for it:

MonstersAndDames.jpg

There’s only going to be 1000 of these M&D books at the show, so if you want one better grab one early! The original line art for mine (and probably most of the others) will be part of ECCC’s annual charity auction.

And for those curious, here is what the rest of my convention schedule for 2011 is looking like:

megacon
march 25th – 27th, 2011
orlando, fl

heroes con
june 3rd – 5th, 2011
charlotte, nc

comic-con
july 21st – 24th, 2011
san diego, ca

baltimore comic-con
